Inside the Vicious Heart: Americans and the Liberation of Nazi Concentration Camps
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (January, 1987)
Author: Robert H. Abzug
Average review score:

A Moving Book
This was an interesting view of the horrors of the holocaust. I think there is better works that detail out what happened in the camps, but this book really gives you the insight into what it was like to roll through the gates of the camp in an American jeep. You almost can feel the chain of emotions the solders go through: confusion, anger, pity, and sadness. This must also be in some small part what the current American solders see in Afghanistan with millions starving. This is a well-written, very unique look at the topic and is well worth the price. You will "feel" this book for a long time after you have finished it.

Inside the Vicious Heart
I knew the author personally. I took a Holocaust course from Dr. Abzug while at the University of Texas. I asked him questions about the construction of the book. Placing key photographs right after controversial passages in the book. It was done for effect, and had a profound effect on me. This is a must read book for anyone interested in the Holocaust as well as those interested in how such a event could happen. More than anything else the book showed me how fragile we are as human beings, and that when inudated with violence and horror, how we can become indifferent to it.

brings home the shock of the camps as no other book does
I especially liked the special viewpoint of the book, that is the discovery of the camps through the eyes of American G.I.s

Lieutenant Birnbaum: A Soldier's Story: Growing Up Jewish in America, Liberating the D.P. Camps, and a New Home in Jerusalem (Artscroll History)

Great Book
Wow. Couldn't put it down. Such an amazing person - he's done so many things in the course of his life. A Must-read!

Hard to put down
I started reading this book one shabbos and had trouble putting it down to daven. After shabbos I didn't put it down until I finished on Sunday. For any serious Jew this book will be absolutely inspirational, for others it is very interesting. You read about Meyer Birnbaum's life in such a way that you can picture yourself there. Learn what it was like to grow up as an Orthodox Jew in a poor family early in the Century. He was there for the near beginnings of the Agudath movement in the U.S. He was an officer in the U.S. Army (a combat soldier no less) who managed to remain observant under some very difficult experiences, not all due to combat- sometimes fellow soldiers weren't all that understanding, picture wearing tifillin to daven in the morning during basic training (anyone who was in the military should be in cold sweats at that picture). He helped with concentration camp survivors and helped get many to Israel and he moved to Israel in time to see the birth of a nation. This is an inspirational story, with doses of intrigue and suspense. One of the best books I ever read.

The Life of A True Mench
A detailed account that keeps the reader turning page after page in excitement. This autobiography by a devoted orhtodox Jew who maintains his traditions and integrity throughout the hardships of life, growing up poverty-stricken in America, and serving in the Untied States army during World War II, will surely inspire and enthrall readers from all backgrounds.

Marven of the Great North Woods
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt Children's Books (01 September, 1997)
Authors: Kathryn Lasky and Kevin Hawkes
Average review score:

I really liked this story
I picked up this book because it is a Texas Bluebonnet Award nominee. I found it to be delightful and charming. I was even more delighted to find that it is a true story about the author's father. That sort of information always makes a story even more alive. I greatly enjoyed this book. For the curious, this isn't the only book the author has written about her family.

a unique and wonderful story
This is a charming, interesting book. Kids will be intrigued by Marven's adventure - not only by the notion of being sent away from his family, but also the dramatic reasons for it and the incredibly different and appealing life he gets to lead with the lumberjacks. Adults will like all that, too, and will also be won over by the warmth and, ultimately, gentless of this very unusual story. A lovely, rare find.

A warm book about a remarkable man
Marven Lasky was my mother's husband. He passed away last week at the age of 91. I only read this book in detail to find out more about him. For more about his family, see "The Night Journey", also by this author.

Money Rx for Physicians
Published in Paperback by Trunkey Pub (25 September, 2000)
Author: Steven C. Camp
Average review score:

Booklist Review by David Rouse
Camp tailors financial advice specifically to the medical profession with a regular column that appears in Physician's Money Digest and Dentist's Money Digest. He is also the author of MONEY: 127 Answers To Your Most Asked Financial Questions (1995). He now answers 338 new questions in this compilation of queries sent to him by readers of his columns and by those who have heard or seen him on the financial talk-show circuit. His simple, straightforward question and answer format is arranged into 10 categories: evaluating investments, economic influences, understanding stocks and bonds, planning for retirement, IRA's, reducing taxes, paying for college, estate planning, insurance and home ownership and personal and family matters. Included are interviews with eight leading financial experts, such as Harry Dent and Jeremy Siegel. Although much of the advice targets doctors who have medical practices, there are also plenty of tips for anyone concerned about his or her financial health.-

Money RX for Physicians rated a five star
This same author published "Money Matters Made Easy" some years ago, and it did more than most financial books do, it gave both the beginner and the oldtime investor an overview of how to plan, execute, and follow through with investment ideas, through questions and answers. Now this new book adressed to doctors, in the same format, but also just as revelant to the average person, covers many more subjects, and has excellent interviews with 2 of the most astute and knowledgeable persons in the financial field. This book is a must for very household.

Especially for Doctors
This is an example of a well-targeted book: the 750,000 doctors in the United States. It is a book doctors will identify with. But much of the advice, tips and insight will benefit anyone who wishes to build wealth.

The chapters cover evaluating investments, economic influences, understanding stocks and bonds, planning for retirement, IRAs, reducing taxes, paying for college, estate planning, insurance/home ownership, and personal/family matters. The book is an interview with answers to 338 financial questions categorized into chapters. The busy physician will find the book easy to read between patients, as most questions/answers are less than a page long.

Steven Camp is a certified financial planner, columnist, the author of two other financial books and the vice-president of a major brokerage firm.

As a publisher, author of 113 nonfiction books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I recognize the value of targeting your reading audience. Steven Camp is delivering his vital financial message to a group of professionals in a time of change: doctors. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

Northridge High Football Camp: A Novel
Published in Paperback by Heretic Books (March, 1996)
Author: S. Joseph Krol
Average review score:

Very Good book of coming to terms....
I actually was very impressed with this book. Like other reviewers have said, the terminology in this book to describe certain body parts is somewhat harsh, and vulgar, but it is actually very accurate. High school guys do talk this way, and do actually this way at football camp, so it adds a bit of reality to the book.

Nevertheless, the story of Vinnie and Vuch was a very good one. They way the author takes his time laying out the budding friendship and relationship between these two football hunks/stars was extremely good. I really liked the interaction between them and the other characters, especially the character nicknamed 'Meat'.

I was also very impressed with the way the author ended the book. It keeps the reader guessing on the future'.

I think this is a well-written book and highly recommend this book to all young adults and up.

Vinnie and Vuch were awesome!
This was the story of two tough and popular football players who find themselves attracted to each other. In their rough and, I guess, brash football world, they develop an infatuation as old as time. They attend football camp together and come to terms with their feelings for each other.
The language is coarse and some of the descriptions are gross, but this is what my football and basketball playing brothers and their friends were like in high school. I think that S. Krol Joseph does an excellent job portraying these characters as real, tough football players. He also captures their sensitivities and their growing affection. I think the build of emotion is realistic and the self-doubt and denial is handled in a subtle and completely natural way. Also, the romantic suspense was beautiful. I could have hoped to hear more about Vinnie and Vuch after football camp, but I have to admit the ending was satisfying. I read the book in one sitting! If you like gay teen stories or romance, I think this is a must have and it will hold a nice place in my collection.

Summary
A brash but sensitive [young adult] novel set in the all-male world of football camp. [gay men][fiction]

Remembering to Forget: Holocaust Memory Through the Camera's Eye
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (November, 1998)
Author: Barbie Zelizer
Average review score:

Read This Book!
This book is an original, introducing the world to an extraordinarily intelligent and sensitive author. I recommend this book to anyone concerned with the effect of atrocity on humankind.

A Breathtaking Research Book-The Best One Yet!
When I began reading this book, I was planning on using it as a resource for my college thesis. However, once I began I became utterly interested in all Ms. Zelizer had to write. This is truly an excellent book.

This book is an amazing book
It shws the holocaust via the media better than any other book I have read. I was not at all surprised when it won the Simon V. Weisenthal award. It is a must to read.

A Smile as Big as the Moon: A Special Education Teacher, His Class, and Their Inspiring Journey Through U.S. Space Camp
Published in Paperback by Griffin Trade Paperback (February, 2003)
Authors: Mike Kersjes and Joe Layden
Average review score:

Love it, love it, love it!
Being somewhat of an idealist working in the field of special ed., I am frequently frustrated by the barriers placed in front of me by administrators, special ed. directors, program managers, etc. This book reminds me that it's worth the battle...that our kids really can touch the sky. As I'm sure you can tell, I love this book! Kerjes is honest and humorous in his portrayal of the struggles he faced in bringing his kids to Space Camp. It's inspiring, and even better, it's TRUE!

A special-ed wish-fulfillment fantasy
I don't quite dare hope that I'll ever find a special education teacher for my kids who's as determined, ornery and willing to dream big dreams as Mike Kersjes, but it's sure nice to think so. As the parent of one child with learning disabilities and one with fetal alcohol effects, I've often been frustrated by the careful modesty of the goals proposed for challenged children -- the very lack of specialness in special education. What I like about this book is the fact that with really well thought-out planning -- not just wishes or hopes or good will but real nitty-gritty planning and thinking about what the kids would need to get them to Space Camp and then seeing it through -- the students were able to succeed beyond their own or anyone else's imagining. It's a matter of deciding what's best and making it happen, rather than making the best of what's happened already. I'd sure like to see more of that outside of the pages of books. (A note regarding the cover of the paperback edition: Did the illustrator read the book at all? Despite the sweet little March of Dimes-style children shown gazing moonward, the book is about big, troublesome, oversized, irreverent, unhygeinic teen-agers. Compelling, but not so cute.)

Kids and Space are Special
"Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds." Albert Einstein.

For Kerjes, sticking with coaching football at Forest Hills Northern High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan would have been easier than navigating the loops necessary to get to Space Camp. At stake was setting a precedent: They were pioneers, the first in line. Would they fail, only to have NASA close the shuttle doors to Space Camp for all children with special needs?

What happened was a miracle: Kersjes class was the first group of children with special needs to not only attend Space Camp but, in the process, run circles around the neuro-typicals and gifted children from other schools across the U.S.

But look further than this softcover version; the rights have been bought by Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney Pictures. Surely the book and screen version will be mandatory curricula in teacher's colleges nationwide.

Go for it, Mike Kersjes!

Solaris Operating Environment Boot Camp

Authors: David Rhodes and Dominic Butler
Average review score:

A very good book for Solaris
If you know already a system unix-like this book it is perfect in order to understand Solaris. Clearly, simple and precise in the examples. Don't choose this book if you are new to systems unix-like.

An important book for who wants to use Solaris
Excuse me for my English, but I am Italian!
The book is truly useful in order to handle Solaris 9. I know linux, and I find that with this book the answers on solaris are indeed exhausting. The book is clear, simple, and useful also for me (I'm italian) and the my english is not perfect. This book is truly perfect if you already know an operating system unix-like; therefore if you want to become a good administrator of a true system unix this book is for you!

Invaluable guide for day-to-day task of Solaris SysAdmin
This book is carefully written by explaining and giving you examples on how to use the tools mostly used by Solaris System Administrators in their day-to-day administration of Solaris OE.

This book doesn't tackles installation but rather giving you the answer on how to successfully administer Solaris OE. This book address the chapters which is considered missing in most Solaris Administration book. What I like most in this book which is missing in the other books are Booting and Halting the system, Shells, Swap Space, Local Area Network and more.

With this book, who needs man pages?

Spicy Camp Cookbook
Published in Digital by Menasha Ridge ()
Authors: M. Timothy O'Keefe and Tim O'Keefe
Average review score:

Delicious and easy to prepare recipes
One of the highlights of outdoor recreation is eating around the campfire. Timothy O'Keefe's The Spicy Camp Cookbook is a wonderful compendium of delicious and easy to prepare recipes especially suited to just such occasions. From Greek-Style Meatballs; Dogs on a Stick; and London Broil with Mustard Marinade; to Spicy Oriental Baked Chicken; Sour Cream French Apple Cobbler; and Spicy Popcorn, The Spicy Camp Cookbook will soon become a camping out favorite! In addition to the wealth of recipes, O'Keefe has included invaluable suggestions on repackaging food to save on weight and space; advice on how to plan meals; an Equivalent Measure and Conversion Chart; as well as a thorough and "user friendly" index. If you are going camping, whether on foot, horseback, canoe, or RV, begin your trip planning by browsing through The Spicy Camp Cookbook!

Not just for camping...
I enjoy reading an interesting cookbook, and Spicy Camp Cooking is filled with great recipes, information on menu planning, spices, cooking tips for camping, and a variety of foods to prepare. From appetizers, salads, stir fry, grilled meals, and desserts, this book has it all. O'Keefe knows that the culinary arts and a taste for spicier foods has been lacking in the outdoor recreation area. That void has been filled with his book. If you like to try new recipes with a gourmet flair, but with a minimum of both time and ingredients, take a look at his book. Spicy roasted potatoes, spicy chicken stir fry, and sour cream french apple cobbler are just a few of the delights that await you when you open this book. Of course, limiting yourself to using this book while camping would be a waste of great food. These can all be made in your own comfortable kitchen. Bon appetit!

Named "BEST BOOK" by the Florida Outdoor Writers Assoc.
In this collection of recipes from around the world, spicy means "tasty," not hot. Perfect for campers, RVers, yachtsmen and the backyard cook. Outdoor writers probably spend more time with a camp stove than anyone, and judges for the Florida Outdoor Writers Assoc. named this the BEST BOOK of 1998.

Summer Programs at New York Colleges for Kids 8-18: 1998-1999
Published in Paperback by Summer Program Press (August, 1997)
Author: Carole Warsawer-Greenblatt
Average review score:

yes, worth buying but read my review first
This reference is surely one of the most user-friendly and parent-friendly guides I've come across. ...

The ultimate reference for parents in and around NYS
Finally a very well-put-together reference for us research-weary parents from New York and its border states! I would encourage all parents who are beginning to think about the summer of '99 to get this book very soon: There are early applicaion deadlines and/or limited space in certain academic and arts programs. There are also lots of great programs described in this reference which I would never have heard about otherwise.

a very easy-to-follow, well-organized reference
Someone finally put together a college campus reference for kids! This is really well- formatted and organized with decent-size print and heavy enough paper. Decriptions and program information seem very complete and with no advertising of any kind, I feel confident about its all-inclusiveness
